Salsa/Tango dancing that is! Actually, we have been really busy this last week with non-snow activities. We arrived at Catheral Square last week to do a little geo-caching and while there, the town cryer (pictured) announced a Salsa/Tango demonstration, so naturally, one of us was very interested, particularly when he saw the costume (pictured), so we watched for awhile and then went on our way. Valentine's day was spent attending a concert at the Catheral. The Catheral Choir is raising money for their July/August trip to Great Britain and they gave a superb concert along with Dame Malvina Major, (opera of course), Fiona Pears, violionist extraordinare and an unbelievable flower fashion show with people as flowers in costumes of fabric. We have never seen anything like it and were in awe. You actually forgot that people were modeling the "flowers" they were so engaging. The choir sang a medly of Shakesphere poems and sonnets set to jazz tunes, and it was also unusual and fun.
Last Friday was the opening game in ChCh for the rugby team. They are the Crusaders (of course) and they were playing the Brumbies from Australia. Apparently, there are new rules to the game of Rugby that took effect in the off-season (two months!) that have changed the game alot. Anyway, we arrived at the game, dressed for rain, in our fleece jackets and black trash bags and it was a good thing. As soon as we sat down, it began to rain...... buckets!!!! We had to leave our umbrella at the door, as they were not allowed, so the trash bags came in handy. We ask the two girls sitting behind us if they could explain the game to us, but they were from Sweden, so no help there. The pregame show was fun as the music got very loud and crusader-ish then the gates to the castle opened and the "crusaders" rode out on horses (picture) and worked the crowd up pretty nicely. Just before the game began, two gentlemen sat down next to me and I felt as though I was in Camelot as they were both so handsome and smelled so good! I told Jon they were Sir Lancelot #1 and #2. I was completely dumb-struck and for the first time in quiet a while was too intimidated to strike up a conversation. I just sat there and enjoyed the view!!!!! Poor Jon was sitting next to a drinking bloke and didn't have nearly the pleasant experience I had. We sort of figured out the game. Not at all like our football except for the "football" they use. More like our soccer with time keeping and one ref on the field. We did hear some new Kiwi swear words that were very colorful, but somehow with the accent, didn't seem so harsh! Well the game progressed and so did the rain, until by halftime we were nearly soaked to the bone and since I was still swooning over Lancelot 1 and 2, Jon suggested we leave. We caught the shuttle to our "home" and dried out.
Saturday we woke to more rain, so decided that it was another foreign film day, so went to see a wonderful Danish movie at the Arts Cinema called "After the Wedding". I highly recommend it along with the French film we saw 2 weeks ago called "Priceless". Both are sub-titled in English and anyone over 15 would throughly enjoy them. We did. Saturday was the day the drought ended here in Canterbury and the wind broke my umbrella! Oh well, we are warm and comfy now. We spend Sunday at the port in Lyttleton (picture). It was very hot and sunny and felt good to have a beer on the deck overlooking the harbour.
We are having a wonderful experience and loving all the people here. Tomorrow is our 22nd anniversary, and we just might make it! Tomorrow (20th) is also my dear momma's birthday and my cousin Kathleen's birthday. Happy Birthday girls. It will be a great day. We are celebrating with a walk then dinner at Strawberry Fare. Thursday, we are meeting Lisa Glenn (Wenatchee girl) and her friend for dinner and Friday we are going to go to Stephanie and Dean's house for a Scottish-themed dinner (no, Haggis will not be on the menu!).
We miss all of you. Next week is the Festival of Flowers here in Christchurch and so I hope to have some stunning flower pics for you.
Take care everyone.
